Be the Change You Want to See in the World

How often do we find ourselves thinking that the world/people/things need to change? Probably quite often in today’s world. How often do we have the capacity to change those things or control them? Certainly less often than we wish. This lack of control over the situation usually comes with some extra baggage like frustration, disappointment, feeling of helplessness… you name it. And this is how the vicious circle begins. Does this sound familiar to you?

Is there anything we can do when it feels like there’s nothing we can do? Yes! We can change ourselves and the way we show up in the world for others. To see the change, we must first become that change. Quite a simple thought, yet so powerful and empowering. Start with yourself, lead by example, and inspire others.

The hardest part, sometimes, is to find the strength plus the physical and emotional energy to “be the change” when everyone around us is not there yet. It requires a lot of courage, patience, wisdom, and non-reaction. Going against the flow is mentally, physically, and emotionally draining. It can cost you energy, money, health, relationships, jobs, etc.

So how can we support ourselves, so our “energy tank” always stays full? Fortunately, nature created us equipped with a lot of smart and helpful mechanisms so we can function effectively and can heal and repair when needed. A lot of us don’t know or forgot how to use them, but we can still tap into our own power and support ourselves going through the turbulence of today’s life.

Pumpkin Soup

This pumpkin soup was so delicious! An employee brought it in to share for lunch and it was the perfect recipe to make us all dream of autumn, which is soon to come! If you have the time, roast a fresh pumpkin to use in the recipe. However, canned pumpkin puree works just as well and taste just as delicious.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp minced ginger
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1 ½ cup pumpkin puree (either fresh or a 15-ounce can)
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 (14-ounce) can coconut milk
  • Optional garnishes: extra coconut milk, pumpkin seeds

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add onion and sauté for 4 minutes until softened.
  2. Add garlic, ginger, and curry powder. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the pumpkin puree and broth. Then, increase heat to high and bring to a boil.
  4. Reduce heat to low. Simmer softly for 10 minutes or until heated through.
  5. Add coconut milk and bring to a soft boil. Simmer for another 10 minutes or until heated through.
  6. Remove from heat. Then, puree soup by using an immersion blender. Alternatively, transfer soup in small amounts to a blender and puree each batch until smooth. Hot soup splatters in a blender and can cause the lid to pop off mid-blend, so be careful and don’t overfill.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Finally, serve hot garnished with a drizzle of coconut milk and pumpkin seeds.

NOTES

  • The soup is meant to a have a rich consistency. If it’s too thick for you, just add more broth or water to thin it out.
  • If you are not vegan or vegetarian, vegetable broth can be substituted with chicken broth.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to five days.

A friend of Light-Life Tools, Amy Wall, shared the following tips with us. Law Enforcement Officer

Start with Yourself to Bring Positive Changes to the World 

Harmony creators know that you first start with yourself in order to bring positive changes to the world. However, this can seem impossible. Your social media news feed is filled with posts of fights and death. News segments talk of war and crime. Neighbors talk about burglaries and destruction of their properties. There are so many wildfires and droughts everywhere. Then illnesses and disease? Let’s not even get started on that. With all this negativity surrounding the world, how are you supposed to bring a positive state to it? Then once you start thinking like this, you start to give up on your dreams. And harmony seems so far away. Yet, it doesn’t have to be this way.

The truth is, it is possible to create harmony and bring a positive state to the world. But first, you have to start with yourself. You have to change your mentality, your habits, and your actions. It’s not easy, but it’s necessary to make an impact. American author and speaker John C. Maxwell wrote: “Most people want to change the world to improve their lives, but the world they need to change first is the one inside themselves.”

Upgrade How You Think and Act

You bring a positive state to the world not by pointing out what is wrong with it, but by upgrading how you think and act, and coinciding this with what you wish to see in the world. You accomplish this by changing what you pay attention to. By feeding the positivity. Once you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. This alone will have a ripple effect on the lives of those around you. For example, you read a negative post on social media that ignites fear and anger inside you. Healthy 3-Ingredient Brownies

These healthy 3-ingredient brownies were so easy to make! One of our employees baked them at home and brought them in as an afternoon treat. They turned out like a dense, fudgy, chocolate bite of deliciousness, we just had to share them with you. Dairy free, gluten free, no sugar added… Such an easy way to satisfy the sweet tooth.

Healthy 3-Ingredient Brownies

Ingredients

  • 6 large ripe bananas
  • 1 cup almond butter
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat over to 350°F. Line a square pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In large mixing bowl, mash the bananas very well.
  3. Add remaining ingredients and mix together until smooth. Blending ingredients in a blender will result in a creamier texture brownie.
  4. Pour mixture into lined pan and bake for 20-30 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean.
  5. Allow brownies to cool in pan completely before slicing into pieces.

Dance to Let Your Inner Child Play

Tip of the month: Dance to let your inner child play! Dancing is a great way for you to live in the moment. It’s an excellent stress releaser from everything life throws at you. It can be a powerful way to reduce intense emotions and enhance our happiness. When we’re moving our bodies, we become more in touch with ourselves. Our soul becomes centered by fusing both body and mind. Dancing forces us to be present in the now and not think about what was happening and what may happen next.

Dancing offers a creative outlet for you to express your emotions in a safe place. Close your blinds, close your door, and turn up the music. You don’t need a routine; you don’t need to be coordinated. Just feel the music and move your body. Let your inner self shine. Let your spirit fly free. Express your anger, frustration, sadness, and of course, express your happiness through the beat of your movement.  

The most important thing to remember… Dance like no one’s watching. Unless you’re a professional dancer, there’s no competition to win and no one to impress. You’re dancing to find release. You’re dancing as an expression of your soul. Focus on how it feels. Swing your hips, shuffle your feet, wave your arms around. And lastly, dance to let your inner child play.

Tip of the Month: Breathing Exercises

Tip of the month is breathing exercises. Your body needs oxygen to live. As humans, we get oxygen by breathing through our mouths and nose. We can also use our breath to help with all kinds of physical and emotional issues. Breathing exercises can help put your body in a relaxed state. When your body is relaxed, your brain becomes more relaxed. This may help reduce stress or anxiety, increase energy, lower blood pressure, improve lung function, aid digestion, and so much more.

Pursed lip breathing

This is an intentional breathing technique that forces you to slow down. It can also be useful during certain activities like lifting or stair climbing.

• Firstly, find a comfortable seat and relax your neck and shoulders
• Keeping your mouth closed, inhale slowly through your nose for 2-3 counts
• Then, pucker your lips as if you were giving a kiss
• Lastly, exhale slowly, keeping your breath slow and steady, for 4 counts

Lion’s Breath

This technique is an energizing breathing practice that can help relax muscles in your chest and face, relieves stress, and improves cardiovascular function.

• To begin, sit in a comfortable position and press your palms against your knees
• Then, inhale deeply through your nose
• Open your mouth wide and stick our your tongue down towards your chin
• At the end, exhale through your mouth making a long ‘ha’ sound
• Do this breath 2 to 3 times

Humming Bee Breath

This technique helps create instant calmness. It can be used to relieve frustration, anxiety, or anger.

• To start, sit in a comfortable chair or on the floor
• Close your eyes and relax your face
• Place your first fingers on the tragus cartilage that partially covers your ear
• Then, inhale deeply
• Gently press your fingers into the cartilage while slowly exhaling
• As you exhale, make a loud humming noise with your mouth shut
• Continue as many times as needed

Advice on Dealing with Negative Self-Talk

Nicole,

Thank you for your email. I appreciate your question because you’re not alone. Many are faced with challenges these days and it is easy to go down a negative spiral.

Here is what helps me: I don’t watch the news or read the paper. They all seem to say the same and I am very visual, so stressful pictures haunt me for a very long time. Instead, I focus on how I would like the world to be and how I want other people to interact with me. Every morning, I write down and visualize how I want my day to go. If I have meetings scheduled, I picture them being productive and
a win for all involved. I write down what I’m going to accomplish and see it all in a positive light.

Now, I understand this may sound a bit hard to do and it is in the beginning. However, it is so worth it if you make an effort to practice it.

You were asking for a Tool and, of course, I have some recommendations for you. To help with the negative self-talk, our Pyramid Pendant comes to mind.
