Tip of the Month: Breathing Exercises

Tip of the month is breathing exercises. Your body needs oxygen to live. As humans, we get oxygen by breathing through our mouths and nose. We can also use our breath to help with all kinds of physical and emotional issues. Breathing exercises can help put your body in a relaxed state. When your body is relaxed, your brain becomes more relaxed. This may help reduce stress or anxiety, increase energy, lower blood pressure, improve lung function, aid digestion, and so much more.

Pursed lip breathing

This is an intentional breathing technique that forces you to slow down. It can also be useful during certain activities like lifting or stair climbing.

• Firstly, find a comfortable seat and relax your neck and shoulders
• Keeping your mouth closed, inhale slowly through your nose for 2-3 counts
• Then, pucker your lips as if you were giving a kiss
• Lastly, exhale slowly, keeping your breath slow and steady, for 4 counts

Lion’s Breath

This technique is an energizing breathing practice that can help relax muscles in your chest and face, relieves stress, and improves cardiovascular function.

• To begin, sit in a comfortable position and press your palms against your knees
• Then, inhale deeply through your nose
• Open your mouth wide and stick our your tongue down towards your chin
• At the end, exhale through your mouth making a long ‘ha’ sound
• Do this breath 2 to 3 times

Humming Bee Breath

This technique helps create instant calmness. It can be used to relieve frustration, anxiety, or anger.

• To start, sit in a comfortable chair or on the floor
• Close your eyes and relax your face
• Place your first fingers on the tragus cartilage that partially covers your ear
• Then, inhale deeply
• Gently press your fingers into the cartilage while slowly exhaling
• As you exhale, make a loud humming noise with your mouth shut
• Continue as many times as needed

Advice on Dealing with Negative Self-Talk

Nicole,

Thank you for your email. I appreciate your question because you’re not alone. Many are faced with challenges these days and it is easy to go down a negative spiral.

Here is what helps me: I don’t watch the news or read the paper. They all seem to say the same and I am very visual, so stressful pictures haunt me for a very long time. Instead, I focus on how I would like the world to be and how I want other people to interact with me. Every morning, I write down and visualize how I want my day to go. If I have meetings scheduled, I picture them being productive and
a win for all involved. I write down what I’m going to accomplish and see it all in a positive light.

Now, I understand this may sound a bit hard to do and it is in the beginning. However, it is so worth it if you make an effort to practice it.

You were asking for a Tool and, of course, I have some recommendations for you. To help with the negative self-talk, our Pyramid Pendant comes to mind. Tapping Your Body can Create Balance

Tapping your body can create a balance in your body’s energy system. Also known as the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), this technique is a self-administered healing technique that reduces negative symptoms from physical-emotional issues. It’s based on modern psychology and the principles of acupuncture’s meridian, but without the use of needles.

Tapping can be beneficial for your heart-brain coherence (read more about this in our blog). It can help generate positive emotions which increases your brain’s ability to function. Here’s a great video from Tapping with Brad Yates on listening with your heart and being more heart-centered.  

Tapping is a simple 5 step process:

  1. Begin by tapping underneath your pinky with the fingertips on the other hand. Identity what the issue is and what your focus will be.
  2. Then rate the intensity of the issue on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the worst
  3. Create a comforting phrase that acknowledges the issue and accepts yourself regardless
  4. Tap the following points on your body 8 times as you repeat your comforting phrase. Complete all 8 points 3 times through:
    1. Eyebrow
    2. Side of the eye
    3. Under the eye
    4. Under the nose
    5. Chin
    6. Top of collarbone
    7. Armpit
    8. Finish at the top of your head
  5. Finally, take a deep breath. Rate the intensity of the issue. Repeat all 8 steps as necessary.

A Ritual to End the Year.

I have a ritual to end the year that I would like to share with you. It allows me to reflect on the past year so I can make space for the upcoming year. It can be difficult sticking with a New Year’s resolution when you’re holding on to unfinished projects and ideas.

The first part of my ritual to end the year is to recap what I’ve accomplished. During the last two weeks of December, I make a list of all my unfinished projects. I decide which ones I would like to complete by the end of the year. Instead of focusing on new projects, I like to focus on completing the ones that would make the most difference in my life. I also look at what needs to be eliminated from my list. I don’t know about you, but I have been carrying around old projects and ideas thinking, or should I say ‘dreaming’, that one day I will get to it. Let me tell you what a relief it has been when I finally decided to let go. It was then satisfying to take the bull by the horn and finish those items I knew would give me joy.

Reflecting on Experiences

Part of my ritual to end the year is to review the year in full. To reflect and ask myself: what has been beneficial for me, what do I want to continue in the following year, and what do I want to let go of? Another part of my ritual is to show gratitude to my team, family, and friends. I am grateful for all I have experienced throughout the year. I cherish all the beautiful moments and commit to having more in the new year.

Another part of my ritual is to smudge my house on the 31st of December. This allows me to energetically let go of the year and make space for the new year.

Traveling over the New Year

This year I will do my end of year ritual at my German office. I am working on reorganizing it and taking the opportunity to let go of the old that doesn’t serve us anymore. It is hard work but focusing on what it will look like once it’s done actually makes it fun (most of the time😊).

If you are traveling like me and a ritual to end the year at home is not possible, maybe plan a big spring cleaning session. That’s a project I already have planned for when I get back from Germany.

Ask Katharina: How to stay stress-free during the holidays?

When I say “stay stress-free during the holidays”, I don’t want you to think it cannot be applied for the rest of the year. On the contrary, make it a habit and enjoy less stress in your life. I believe this is what we all aim for.

It starts with you.

Of course, as always, it starts with you. Once you accept that you are the one creating your life, and that includes all the stress, knowing that can empower you to create what you really love. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

From my experience, people get often stuck in the current circumstances or past experiences, and, if it was bad before, they expect it to be just as bad. But it does not have to! Your positive intention and anticipation that this time it all will be fine can make it so!

Here are some ideas on how to stay stress-free during the holidays:

  • Get all your presents way ahead of schedule.
  • If you have to travel, imagine easy travel. If you go by car, see yourself leaving with plenty of time, the roads clear, the weather perfect, just no room for stress at all.
  • Play music that brings the spirit of the holidays into your home.
  • Instead of cooking all the food yourself, suggest a potluck dinner.
  • Decorate the table the night before.
  • Have fun games ready for all to play.
  • Set rules for subjects to not address.
  • Imagine sitting down to a delicious meal, all happy and laughing and enjoying each other’s company.
  • Inspire delightful conversations with family members and friends you haven’t seen for a while.

And, most importantly, imagine exactly how you want the holidays to be, how you want to feel, e.g., relaxed, joyous, appreciated, peaceful, and calm. Imagine how everyone is getting along and happy to see each other. See yourself eating just the right amount so you’re not feeling sick later. Make sure you have this clear image and feeling and bring that to your awareness several times during the day. Start the morning and go to bed with this happy picture in your head.

You will notice a difference. I speak from experience. Science has proven that our thoughts influence the object we are thinking of. Knowing that is a powerful reason for sending thoughts of love and appreciation to all we encounter. Remember the saying “what goes around, comes around”?

What does a harmonious environment mean for you?

While driving home the other day I listened to a podcast and the question, “What does a harmonious environment mean for you?” came up. Of course, I understand most of us have a different idea of it, but what does a harmonious environment mean for you?

Harmony at home

  • Sitting at the table with your family sharing a meal and listening to each other’s stories of the day?
  • Being genuinely kind and loving to each other?
  • Watching a movie together?
  • Going to games together?
  • Having plants and/or pets in your house?
  • The children are ‘good’ children:
    • Always bringing good grades?
    • Always cleaning up their room?
    • Helping in the house?
    • Having friends you agree with?
    • Don’t disagree?

Harmony in your relationships

  • Your partner is fully supporting you by helping:
    • With work around the house and the yard?
    • Homework with the children?
    • Listening to your stories from work?
    • Taking care of your aging parents?
    • With your volunteer work?
    • You and your partner are in alignment with your values?
    • You share the same spiritual principles?
  • Is your work rewarding?
  • Your finances are flowing?
  • Your relationships with family and friends are empowering?
  • You have time to be with yourself to meditate and pray or just read or listen to music?

Harmony in your surroundings

  • You live in an area that is nourishing you with:
    • Clean air?
    • City life or living close to nature?
    • Beautiful view to the mountains or beach or dessert?
    • Nice neighborhood with friendly neighbors?

I am sure I did not cover everything, but the intention is to start a thought process. What if we don’t have any or have very little of what I’ve listed or what you would add? How about if we first look to find peace and harmony within and then let it reflect on the outside?

The importance of living/being in a harmonious environment is backed up by epigenetics studies. They teach us that our behaviors and environment can cause changes in how our body reads a DNA sequence.

Doesn’t it make sense to make sure we live in an environment that nourishes us, that supports us? Knowing from my own experience is that the ‘wrong’ people in our environment can make us sick. For example, when I was under a lot of physical pain and limited in my movement for several years, I thought I depended on those people, but it turned out, once I disassociated from them my health improved. Look in your own life? Do you put up with people and situations because you believe you have to? Of course, I understand making significant choices is at a cost, however, the following benefits are invaluable. I do know that also from experience.

What I learned the hard way is that I cannot make someone happy. Happiness is a choice, it is not depending on other people. Everybody is on their own life journey and it is not appropriate for us to interfere with it. For example, if we take things personally and, as a result choose to allow others to put us down, it is on us to make some adjustments. The book ‘The Four Agreements’ is a good read if you want to get more acquainted with that concept.

Sometimes, people think if they get one of our Environmental Harmonizers it takes care of everything and they don’t need to make any changes in their own behavior and sometimes location. In fact, my late husband, Slim Spurling, made it very clear when he said, “The Light-Life Tools are created to help you in your personal growth, but they will not do the work for you.” You see, this would interfere with your free will and that would not be okay. In other words, while the Harmonizer can point out to you what you need to change it is up to you to make those changes.

How to manifest

How to manifest is a question I get asked frequently so I thought I give you ideas for the most common areas people are interested in.


We actually manifest constantly, however, most of the time unconsciously. Just look at some of the good things in your life. Did you not think of them before they showed up? Also, look at some of the unfortunate things that happened in your life. How often did you think about them, worry over bad things to happen until they finally did? Remember, worrying is praying for what you don’t want.
Here are some suggestions on how to manifest.

How to manifest a new job

If you want to find a new job, think about what you would do, what skills you are going to use, who you are going to work with, what kind of environment you’ll be working in and most of all, how do you want to feel at your new job. How important is it to you to feel appreciated and praised for your good work? What work environment would make you feel comfortable, more a family-style workplace or more a larger company? Does the pay make you feel excited or is it not the most important part of the job?

How to manifest money

Money is often on the top of people’s lists. Here it is also important to focus on what you want to do with the money, i.e., see yourself taking the vacation of your dreams with your family, see yourself donating a nice amount to the charity of your choice, see yourself driving the new car you’ve been looking at for some time, see yourself moving into the new home, etc… We usually don’t want money just to have it, we want to use it for something that brings more joy and happiness in our life.

How to manifest a romantic relationship

Romantic relationships are also a favorite topic when it comes to manifesting. Instead of getting specific about the looks of your partner, focus on how you want to feel in the relationship. See yourself spending time with your loved one, doing fun things together. Go into the feeling of being loved and returning the love, being accepted, feeling great, all that you desire for this relationship, allow yourself to indulge in the feeling.

More tips on manifesting

Whatever you want to manifest, always make sure to feel it and see it to be it. What that means is that our subconscious doesn’t know the difference between what is real and what we imagine. If we go into the feeling like we have it already the subconscious can go to work to make it happen.


You may also choose to create a vision board or a wish list. It can help you stay connected to your goals. Look at it daily and go into the feeling of having each item on your board and on your list. Be consistent and make it a priority. Set aside some time to visualize/pray/think about your goals every day.

When it comes to setting a time frame, I have seen it work well with an exact date. However, I like my mentor’s approach. He says: “I’d like to have it manifested as soon as possible”. This way you may receive it even earlier than you thought possible, and you know for sure it will come at the right time.

Anchoring – Tip of the month

I would like to share a technique with you that I learned during my NLP training. It is called anchoring and can help you getting out of an unresourceful state in no time. Anchoring does take some practice. To set an anchor you first have to choose a body part that you can touch in public without drawing attention to yourself, i.e. holding one of your fingers.

Next you go back in your memory to find an event that was most uplifting, something that opens your heart and puts a big smile on your face. You start holding your anchor, the one you choose, while you look for that event. Once you have it, you hold your anchor really firm, squeeze it. You can do it with open or closed eyes, that doesn’t matter. Important is that you are in the feeling while you hold your anchor. Take some deep breath and let it go.

You can use one of your fingers for anchoring.

What kind of event should I use?


One you were extremely grateful, happy, confident, you felt most appreciated, or rich or abundant without any evidence in your bank account.

Start with one anchor and situation that is most dear to you and practice. Over time incorporate more anchor as you find necessary. I.e.

  • For fear find an anchor when you felt grateful
  • If you are angry find an event where you felt loved
  • For financial worries find an event where you felt rich or abundant even it didn’t show on your bank account
  • For ill health remember a time where you were healthy and vital or focus on a body part that is healthy.

I think you get the picture. Have fun with it. What I recommend is that you practice it and set a timer on your phone to activate your anchor every few hours and over a period of time until you feel it served its purpose and is installed in you, so you have it at your fingertips when you need it. Makes sense?

How else I can use anchoring ?

You can also apply it with your children or students. How? You let your child talk about something that cheered it up, where you can see and feel how happy she is, then you touch her, maybe on the shoulder, or arm, or hand. When you feel her not so happy, touch the same location. This may need to take more repeats but worth doing.
